Fall Math Ideas
Pumpkin Sequencing
Before you carve
your pumpkin to take a picture of it. Then as
each stage is cut, snap a picture. These are great for
sequencing!!!
Pumpkin Rolling
We have a
pumpkin rolling contest outside on the playground. Each child
takes a turn and rolls the pumpkin as hard as they can. We
measure the
distance and figure out why some pumpkins rolled better/worse than
others.
Leaf Sorting
Take children
outside to collect as many leaves as they can find. Go back and
have
children take turns putting the leaves into groups of small
medium and large leaves.
Scarecrow Math
For math you
could let the children decide how many patches the scarecrow
should have - how many buttons - etc you could also graph their
answers.
Maybe have several shirts to choose from and have them graph
their preferences to see which one has the most votes.
Scarecrow File Folder Game
I have a simple
scarecrow pattern on the folder and the children either
roll the die and place the appropriate number of buttons on the
scarecrow
or the appropriate number of crows on his shoulder. Once your
scarecrow is
done you could also make a list like "one hat, two arms, three
patches, etc Let the children come up with each item.
Go Nuts For Counting
With felt, cut
out a tree and put a bunch of nuts at the bottom of your tree made
out
of felt. Make a squirrel at the bottom of the tree. Make cards
that say different numbers.
Let the children pick a card and then put that many number of
acorns from the
tree in the squirrels mouth! Great for learning counting
and number recognition!
Fall Balancing
In the math center,
have a balancing scale. The kids can "weighing" small gourds,
pumpkins and ears of corn. Talk about which side has more and
which side
has less and why one side of the balance goes down and one side
is up, etc
