Cinco de Mayo Misc. Ideas & Links
Cinco de Mayo Day
Cinco de Mayo, meaning, May 5, celebrates the day the
Mexican army, led
by General Ignacio Zaragoza
defeated an invasion of French
forces in
Pueblo Mexico. The festivities include a parade of
people
dressed as
Mexican and French soldiers. Later in the day a mock
battle occurs
between the
soldiers. The battle climaxes when then
two commanding
generals meet in face-to-face
combat with swords, and the
Mexican wins.
The celebration end with a giant display of
fireworks.
This day is also
celebrated by Mexicans with mariachi bands, dancing,
feasting,
crowning
a queen and piņatas for the children. For extended
activity, make a
piņata.
Serve
traditional mexican food, play Mexican music, play Mexican games,
and
break a pinata. Serve Mexican hot chocolate (add
cinnamon & vanilla to hot cocoa).
