Bells Science Ideas
Using Bells in 5 Senses
Unit
Integrate a bell theme as part of your senses
unit (hearing).
Metal vs. Non Metal
Add a variety of bells (plastic, metal, and
wood)
to your science area to explore metal vs. non metal
and the different sounds each bell makes.
Water Bells
Make and play water bells by filling
glass cups with different amounts of water.
Tap the sides of the glasses with a metal spoon to play the water bells.
Bells Discovery Bottle
Discovery bottles encourage the development of
observation skills, predictability, scientific
concepts, and thinking skills. Once made and placed in plastic carrying
bins, they make a
great center activity that is inexpensive, and fun! Place a handful
of jingle bells in a clear
plastic soda or water bottle. Seal the lid with a glue gun, or tape with
colored plastic tape.
Christmas Instruments
Let the children make a band with jingle bells
and other
instruments and let them explore how they all work.
Sounds of Jingle Bells
Get bells of different sizes and listen to the
different tone each jingles.
Have the child close their eyes and ring one of the bells.
Have them open their eyes and tell you which bell you rung.
Jingle Bell Liquid
Sounds
Not sure even if this will even work but maybe
you can soak a colored
jingle bell in different liquids and see what effect the liquid has
on the bell. Maybe use soda in one and water in the other?????
Sound Patterns
Use bells to make sound patterns. Obtain
3 jingle bells, each a different size. Attach a pipe
cleaner to each one to create a handle. Use a sharpie marker to
label each bell with a different
letter (A, B, or C). Write several different letter patterns on
separate sentence strips, such as
ABAB, AABAAB, and ABCABC. Have the children choose a pattern
card and ring the bells
accordingly. Then have the children make their own pattern and
record it on an index card.
