Bird Songs, Poems, & Fingerplays
Ten Little Birdies
1 little, 2 little, 3 little birdies,
4 little, 5 little, 6 little birdies,
7 little, 8 little, 9 little birdies
10 little flying birds.
Did You Ever See A Birdie?
(Sung to the tune of: "Did You Ever See A
Lassie")
Did you ever see a birdie, a birdie, a birdie,
Did you ever see a birdie go up and go down?
Go up and go down, and go up and go down,
Did you ever see a birdie go up and go down?
Two Little Black Birds
Two little black birds
Sitting on the hill.
(Make fists.)
One named Jack, one named Jill.
(Raise one thumb, then other)
Fly away Jack
(Fly one thumb behind back.)
Fly away Jill.
(Fly other thumb behind back.)
Come back Jack.
(Fly one thumb back.)
Come back Jill.
(Fly other thumb back.)
After the children have enjoyed the rhyme using their thumbs
for Jack and Jill, give each child a pair
of rhythm sticks or tongue depressors. Let the children pretend that their
sticks are Jack and Jill.
Say the first verse of the rhyme using the sticks. Extend the rhyme by
changing the words
and actions of the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh lines. Inflection is
very important as you accent the opposite words each time.
Fly away LOW, fly away HIGH.
Fly away SLOW, fly away FAST.
Fly away QUIET, fly away LOUD.
Fly away STRAIGHT, fly away WIGGLY.
Continue with other opposites.
Unique Creatures - Birds
(Sung to the tune of: "Oh Where, Oh Where
Has My Little Dog Gone?")
Oh what is so special about a bird?
Oh what, oh what can it be?
It's the wings that I spy on a bird
That make it special to see!
Oh what is so special about a bird?
Oh what, oh what can it be?
It is the beak that I spy on a bird
That makes it special to see!
Oh what is so special about a bird?
Oh what,, oh what can it be?
It is the feathers I spy on a bird
That make it special to see!
Flocks of Toucans
Fly, little flock.
Fly high and low.
Fly really fast,
Then fly really slow.
Fly in a circle,
Then land on your feet.
Hop, hop, hop,
Then take a seat.
This Is the Way..;
(Sung to the tune of "Here we go round the
Mulberry Bush")
This is the way we scratch for worms.
(children move their feet in a scratching motion)
This is the way we peck our food.
(children peck)
This is the way we sit on our eggs.
(children squat down and wiggle)
This is the way we flap our wings.
(bend arms at elbows, put thumbs under armpits, and flap)
This is the way we fly away.
(children can "fly" anywhere they want within a set
boundary, but return to circle at end of verse)
