Valentine's Day
Jewelry & Accessories
Heart Scepter
Cut out heart shapes from
styrofoam trays and long strips from the tops of egg cartons.
Cover the table
with newspaper and put out all the materials. Have each child take a
styrofoam
heart and decorate it using glue and red glitter. Show the children how to
cover
the cardboard strip with aluminum foil or cellophane and secure with tape.
Staple the hearts to the covered strips.
Make crowns to go with the scepters and encourage the children to engage in
imaginative play.
Valentine Necklace
Use the clay dough recipe below and let the children create their own
Valentine necklace.
Mix 3 cups of flour and 1 cup of salt together in a large bowl. Add 1 cup of
water,
1/2 cup of vegetable oil, and red food coloring slowly. Knead the dough
thoroughly.
Make into balls. Give each child a ball. They can flatten it and use
heart cookie
cutters to cut out a heart. Punch hole in the top with a pencil or
straw. Child’s
name can be etched on the heart with a pencil. Then they can be
baked at 225
degrees F (110 degrees C) for 2 hours. Be sure to turn them several
times while
baking. This prevents them from curling. They should also be put in
a warm place
to dry. Turn them over each day. When dry, attach yarn and they are
ready to wear.
Heart Necklace
Cut out many small hearts from construction paper. Punch a hole in each
heart and pass one out to
each child. Children string hearts on yarn and
tie around their necks to make attractive necklaces.
Heart Bracelets
Cut out many small hearts and punch a hole in
each one. Children string hearts
on pipe cleaners. Twist the ends of
the pipe cleaners together to make bracelets.
Variation: Cut strips of white
manila tag - 3/4" x 8". Staple them in a circle to form a bracelet.
Cut a number
of small red hearts and glue them onto the bracelet all around the
circle.
Friends' names may be printed on the hearts.
Heart Headband
Make a headband out of heavy paper for each
child. Trace 2 heart cookie cutters onto
pink or red paper for each child and
let the children color and cut them out.
Tape them to pipe cleaners to make
antennae and attach to headband.
Valentine Crown
Cut a 2 inch wide strip of red paper long enough
to fit around your head. Tape the ends together.
Cut two more strip of paper,
each 1inch wide and 12 inches long. Fold one strip in half and make
a 2 inch cut
in the center. Glue that strip from one side of the headband to the other. Glue
the
second strip on so that the band is divided into quarters. Tuck and glue the
center of the second strip into
the cut of the first. Cut a heart and glue into
the center. Decorate the crown with hearts cut from white paper.
Hearty Party Hats
Make a symmetrical heart shape by folding a
12" x 18" sheet of construction paper in half to 6'x18" and
then
cutting through both thicknesses of the paper. Next, cut out a heart
shaped hole in the middle of
the paper to create a large heart shaped frame. Be
sure the hole in the frame is large enough to fit
comfortably on a child's head.
Next, fold the top of the heart to create the brim of the hat. Have the
child decorate the brim by gluing on a heart shaped doily or small heart cut
outs.
When the glue is dry, have the child wear his hat.
Rose Colored Glasses
From cardstock or poster board, cut two hearts
that interlock for the front of the glasses.
Then cut two pieces to be the
side part of the glasses. Cut out the center of the hearts leaving a
border all around. Tape red/pink cellophane inside the center of the
hearts for the "glass" of the glasses.
Variation: Tape red/pink cellophane
on the end of a paper towel tube.
Love Bracelet
Make the bracelet from a strip of construction
paper. Glue small hearts on the paper
or use cute valentine stickers. Staple or
glue the strip to fit over the child's wrist.
