Valentine's Day Flannel Board Ideas

Five Big Valentines

Five big Valentines from the corner drugstore,
I mailed one to a friend - now there are four.
Four big valentines, lovely ones to see;
I mailed one to mother - now there are three.
Three big valentines, red and shiny new;
I mailed one to daddy and now there are two.
Two big valentines, the best is yet to come;
I mailed one to Grandma - now there is one.
One big valentine, the giving's almost done;
I mailed it to Grandpa, and now there are none.

Counting Valentines

Valentines, valentines, how many do I see?
Valentines, valentines, count them with me.
I have red ones,
orange ones, yellow ones, too.
I have green ones, purple ones, and some that are blue.
Valentines,
valentines, how many do I see?
Count them with me! 1-2-3-4-5........

Give each child a red, orange, yellow, green, purple or blue heart.
While adult says verse, children place
hearts on flannel board at
 appropriate time. Count number of hearts and
identify different colors when verse is finished.

This Little Valentine

(Cut out felt hearts in a variety of pinks and reds and with permanent marker, add the features of each line.)

This little valentine is a circle.
This little valentine is a square.
This little valentine is a triangle.
This little valentine has HAIR!
This little
valentine said "Happy Valentine's Day to everyone, everywhere!" (big smiling valentine!)

After reciting the poem several times, have children close eyes as you take away
 one of the valentines. Children open eyes and guess which one is missing. Also
 while children have their eyes closed rearrange the valentine hearts...
have them help you sequence the hearts back to the correct order.

Valentine Rhyme

Five valentines at the corner store.
Five valentines; whom are they for?
Along came (child's name) with a penny to pay
He/she bought a (child
says color) one for (child names another child in the room).
Then he/she went away.

Before chanting the rhyme put 5 different colored valentine hearts on a flannel board.
As the rhyme is chanted each child chooses one valentine from the flannel board and
gives it to one of their friends. Keep chanting the
rhyme until
 all are gone then chant these last two lines yourself.

No more valentines at the corner store
"All sold out," says the sign on the door.
What can you do to show you care?
When at the store, the shelves
are bare?

If you have no flannel board, you can mount hearts on craft sticks for puppet

Special Valentine

Prepare 5 valentines and 5 envelopes to use on the flannel board.

Look at all these valentines; (put valentines on board)
I made one for each friend.
I'll put them in some envelopes,
So each one I can send.
How many valentines do you see?
Start to count them now with me.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5
One for ______(name of child)
One for ______
One for ______, too.
One for ______
And here is one for YOU! (Point to child)

Repeat until each child's name is mentioned.

Sizing Up Hearts

Cut five different sizes of hearts from felt.  Place them on the flannel board
 for the children to arrange from smallest to largest or largest to smallest.
