Shamrock Shake
Cut out a class
supply of shamrock shapes, each one large enough for a child to
stand on.
Use clear con-tact paper to adhere each shamrock to the floor of
your circle time area.
Have the children stand in a circle around the shamrocks. Begin
playing some music and encourage
the children to shake different body parts. Periodically stop the
music and direct the children to find
a shamrock to stand on. For older preschoolers, use shamrocks
that have been programmed with
numbers, letters, or shapes and then have each child identify the
symbol on his/her shamrock.
Leprechaun
Says
Put on a green
outfit and a plastic leprechaun hat and you will be instantly
transformed into
one of those magical little men from Ireland. Then lead the
little ones in this simplified
version of Simon Says. Give a command, such as "The leprechaun
says touch your
toes, then nod your head." Or, if your youngsters seem up to it,
give three part directions,
such as "The Leprechaun says touch your toes, nod your head, and
then reach up to the
ceiling." Once the children have a feel for this activity,
invite each of them,
in turn, to don the leprechaun hat and give the commands.
Leapin'
Leprechauns
Invite the children
to follow your lead as you sing the
song below and perform the corresponding actions.
(Sung to the
tune of: "The Wheels On The Bus")
A leprechaun (jumps
up and down),
(Up and down), (Up and down)!
A leprechaun (jumps up and down),
On St. Patrick's Day!
Irish Jig
Three children hold
hands and rock to an Irish jig. "McNamara's Band"
can be used. For a slower tempo, play "When Irish eyes are
smiling."
Variation: Individual children can dance an Irish jig to Irish
music.
