Halloween Fine Motor Ideas
Foam Sticker Collage
(Photo submitted by Nanette)
Provide the children with a large foam pumpkin and a variety
of Halloween
shaped foam (adhesive backed) stickers to create a Halloween collage.
Play dough Fun
Let children assist you with making play dough. Add orange
kool-aid powder
to dough. Give children Halloween cookie cutters to use with the
play dough.
Pumpkin Pie Playdough
Ingredients Needed:
5 1/2 cups flour
2 cups salt
8 teaspoons cream of tartar
3/4 cup oil
1 container (1 1/12 ounces) pumpkin pie spice
Orange food coloring (2 parts yellow, 1 part red)
4 cups water
Directions:
Mix all of the ingredients together. Cook and stir over medium heat until all lumps
disappear. Knead the
dough on a floured surface until it is smooth.
Store in an airtight container. Place a batch of this dough in
your playdough
center. Add some fall cookie cutters, small pie tins (save from pot pies),
and rolling pins
to the area. (Invite your little ones to make fall cookies or
pumpkin pies. Remind them that these goodies only smell good. No
tasting please!)
Mirror Painting
For delightful disguises, try this neat twist on face painting.
In advance collect a few large
hand mirrors. Then pour a few colors of tempera
paint into shallow pans. Add a small
amount of dishwashing liquid to each pan.
Then, working with one small group at a time,
give each child a mirror. Invite
him to look at his reflection. Then have him finger-paint
features onto the
surface of the mirror to alter his reflection. Offer suggestions for
additions
such as glasses, freckles, wild hair, hats, or mustaches. When finished,
rinse
and dry the mirrors; then invite the next small group to mirror paint.
You'll
hear giggles galore as your little ones design their disguises!
Bobbing Jack-o'-Lanterns
Your youngsters will have a ball when strengthening fine-motor skills at
this
seasonal center. Use a black permanent maker to draw jack-o'-lantern
faces
on a quantity of orange Ping-Pong balls; then float the balls in your
water table.
Place a fishnet (or large spoon) and a jack-o'-lantern bucket
nearby. Using one
hand, a child manipulates the net to scoop the
jack-o'-lanterns, then drops
them into the bucket. For a variation,
encourage a youngster to
use his other hand or to wear a blindfold.
