Can You Hammer A Nail?

            (Sung to the
tune of: "Do Your Ears Hang Low?")

            Can you hammer a
            nail?
Can you saw a piece of wood?
Are you handy with a wrench?
Can you use it like you should?
            The construction worker can
Use these tools in different ways
            Each and every day.

            In Tune With Tools

            (Sung to the
tune of: "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes")

            Help the children
make up a motion that corresponds to each tool.
Have the children perform each tools motion as they sing its name.

Sing the song slowly as everyone gets the hang of it, then increase
            the tempo.

            Saw, hammer, tape
            measure, tape measure.
            Saw, hammer, tape
            measure, tape measure.

            While all the workers work.

      My Little House

      (Sung to the tune of:
      "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star")

      I'm going to
      build a little house
      With windows wide and bright.
With chimney tall and curling smoke
      Rising out of sight.
In winter when the snowflakes fall
Or when I hear a storm,
I'll go and sit inside my house
Where I'll be snug and warm.

      Three Little Pigs

      (Sung to the tune of:
      "Three Blind Mice")

      Three little pigs,
      three little pigs,
      Each built a house,
      each built a house.
The wolf came by and he huffed and puffed.
The straw and stick houses were not so tough.
Thank goodness, the brick house was strong enough
      For three little pigs!

      Who Built a House?"

      (Sung to the tune of:

      Who built a house
      That was made of straw,
Made of straw, made of straw?

      That was made of straw?
The first Little Pig, That's who.

      Who built a house
      That was made of sticks,
Made of sticks, made of sticks?
      Who built a house
      That was made of sticks?
The second Little Pig, That's who.

      Who built a house
      That was made of bricks,
Made of bricks, made of bricks?
      Who built a house
      That was made of bricks?
The third Little Pig, That's who.

      Scoop And Dump

Scoop goes ditch digger in the dirt
      Scoop up all the dirt

Reach up so high with the crane
      (Cup hand, hold up high)
Reach up so high with the crane
Reach up so high with the crane
      Hold the dirt up high

Dump the dirt into the truck
(reach high, drop hand to knees)
Dump the dirt into the truck

      Shovel And Dump Truck

      (Note: This fingerplay
is especially designed to help correct speech  defects.
The combinations, cr, mp, rt, sc, sh, sl, st, sw, th, tr, wa and wo are
      given)

      Scoop, scoop, scoop
The big shovel digs the dirt.
(Make a scooping motion with right hand, palm down; make fist)

      Then it swings around
And empties the dirt and stones
      Into a red dump truck
(Swing right arm from extreme right towards left. Hold right
fist above open left hand. Open fist to "empty the
      shovel.")

      Crash! bang! Thud!
The dirt falls into the truck.
      (repeat scooping, swinging & dumping.)

Now the dump truck is full
Away it goes down the road.
(Move left hand, palm up, away from yourself.)

      Good-bye truck.
      Come back for another load.

      The Steam Shovel

      Since children today see
steam shovels in action at construction sites, this finger play
will add to their concepts of the steam shovel. This example  fits
      into the category of occupations.
If possible, visit a construction project and have the children watch a
      steam shovel in action.

Here is the steam shovel, (Right forearm erect, hand drooping).

And here is the ground. (Two arms enclose area).

See the great boom (Right elbow stationary, forearm moving side to
      side).

      Swing round and round.

It dips, it bites, (Forearm dips, thumb and fingers in grasping
      motion).

It lifts, it throws. (Forearm lifts, thumb and fingers spin).

      My, how the hole

In the ground grows! (Two hands enclose circle).

      Dipping, scooping,

      Lifting, throwing.

See how the hill (Forearms with hands meeting).

      Beside it is growing.

Build Me A House (Old House)

      Old house, tear it down.
Who's going to help me tear it down?
Bring me a hammer, tear it down.
Bring me a saw, tear it down.
The next thing you bring me, tear it down.
Is a wrecking machine, tear it down.
      New house, build it up.
Who's gonna help me build it up?
Bring me a hammer, build it up.
Bring me a saw, build it up.
The next thing you bring me, build it up.
Is a carpenter man, build it up.
The next thing you bring me, build it up.
Is a carpenter man, build it up.

      Carpenter

This is the way he saws the
      wood
      (making saw motion)
      Sawing, sawing, sawing.

This is the way he nails the nail
      (making hammering motion)
      Nailing, nailing, nailing.

This is the way he paints the house
      (making a brushing motion)
      Painting, painting, painting.

      Hammer And Saw

      'Pound, pound, pound'
      Says the little hammer.
      Pound the nails in tight.
      'Saw, saw, saw'
      Says the little saw.
      Saw, saw, saw,
      Saw the board just right.

      Construction Worker

      By sawing and nailing
      and drilling,
A construction worker can make quite a lot
A home or a barn or an office
We're glad for the talent he's got!

      Cranes

      Cranes reach up,
      (reach up)
      Cranes reach down,
      (reach down),
      Cranes reach out,
      (reach straight out),
      And all around.
      (turn around).

This Is the Way We Build A House

      (Sung to the tune
      of: "Mulberry Bush")

This is the way we (measure)
      the board,
      (Measure) the board, (measure)
      the board.
      This is the way
      we (measure) the board,
      When we build a house.

Sing additional verses, replacing the underlined
word, in turn, with saw, sand, hammer, and paint.

I Want To Be A Carpenter
I want to be a carpenter and
                      work the whole day long.
I'll use a great big box of tools; my arms are very
                      strong
First, I'll saw and saw and saw, and cut the boards in
                      two
Little boards and big boards-all kinds of boards will
                      do.
I'll plane and plane and plane the boards for everyone is
                      rough.
Back and forth I'll plane the boards until they're smooth
                      enough.
I'll measure them and measure them - each one down to a
                      T
And then I'll start to build a house for me up in a
                      tree!
