Santa Math Ideas

Sorting Santas

Wrap a variety of empty gift boxes and set out several Hula-Hoop plastic hoops to
designate groupings.  Have the children suggest different ways to  to sort the gifts.  Then have one
child to volunteer to be Santa and wear a Santa hat.  That child sorts the boxes by one of the ideas given.

For more fun, play a mystery sorting game.  Start sorting the gifts, but don't reveal the sorting attribute.
Have the children look at the resulting groups, determine the sorting attribute, and then sort the remaining
packages.  Remove any incorrect packages and have the children continue sorting until all of the gifts are
successfully sorted.  Next, have one child explain the sorting criteria.  Then continue with another round of sorting.
